This Homemade Onion Ring Recipe turned out perfect. Making homemade onion rings at home is quite simple and will definitely stretch my buck a bit more. Grab yourself a few sweet onions and whip these up these homemade onion rings to go with your next burger for dinner. You will love them.
INGREDIENTS
1 large or 2 small Sweet Onions
1 1/2 cup Flour
1 tsp Baking Powder
1 tsp Salt
1 tsp Cayenne Pepper
1 Egg
1 1/2 cup Buttermilk
1/4 cup Water
3/4 cup Bread Crumbs
Salt to taste
1 quart Vegetable Oil for frying
DIRECTIONS
Cut onions into 1/4 inch slices and separate into rings.
Place onions in a bowl.
Add buttermilk and refrigerate for 15 minutes.
Heat the oil
In a small bowl, stir together the flour, baking powder, salt and cayenne.
Dip the onion slices into the flour mixture until they are all coated; set aside. Pour the buttermilk from the bowl into the flour mixture add the water, the egg and stir until blended using a fork.
Dip the floured rings into the batter to coat, then place on a wire rack to drain.
Spread the bread crumbs out on a plate or shallow dish. Dip the onion rings into the crumbs on both sides to coat.
Deep fry a few at a time for 2 to 3 minutes, or until golden brown (turning midway).
Place on paper towels to drain.
When eating onion rings I always dip in ketchup. The new craze seems to be the thousand island type dressing. For some reason I just stick to salt and ketchup. I may have to try the other dipping sauces next time. I always say ‘next time” ha ha! Are you a ketchup or other dipping type person with onion rings?
Next time we make homemade onion rings I am thinking of baking them. I need to find a good baked recipe. I am nervous about giving up my fried versions. I just love fried foods.
