I'm not after fame and success and fortune and power. It's mostly that I want to have a good job and have good friends; that's the good stuff in life. - Drew Barrymore
Why is the highly qualified Generation of today wanting to leave Kolkata (City of Joy) for better job opportunities to other metro cities of our country or decide to go abroad not only for jobs but even for higher education.
There was a time when students from far corners of the country used to pour into Kolkata - Calcutta at that time - for higher studies. Calcutta University, Presidency College, Scottish Church - such names used to reverberate through the ranks of intelligentsia trying to make it big in the socio-political circle. But over the years, the scenario has turned on its head and there has been no let-off in the reverse brain drain.
Bengal does not have enough industries that will ensure students get employed after completing their graduation. "Everyone in higher education wants to get a job at the end of their courses. Hence, they move to places that have better placement facilities. Moreover, the archaic syllabi and the reluctance to update campus facilities have led to the migration.
Academics today is also about placements and a career thereafter. Work opportunity in Kolkata has greatly diminished compared to other cities like Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore.
What do students dream of while pursuing higher studies? Good opportunities to establish himself / herself in the professional field. "But there aren't any opportunities in Bengal. Political turmoil has destroyed the work atmosphere," letting Tata Nano leave Bengal was a blunder and young professionals had to pay for it. Looking for a good job in Kolkata not coming their way so they eventually left the city for better prospects”. This also affected even the local people in that area who were running small businesses of their own. What would they be doing now?
Getting a good job opportunity coupled with quality education is a major consideration. "Any sensible person knows Bengal can not offer both”. Yes, Students do want to stay back, but where are the options?
It is for the Government to think deeply into this and get in more industries and job opportunities so the City does not only offer good jobs but help young generation from getting involved in dirty politics and goondaism / anti social behavior and indulge in violence and other illegitimate means.
No Parent would like their child to go elsewhere for jobs, but yes if it is for their betterment then of course or maybe turn into an anti social. It does really hurt when anyone says that it is a “dying city”. There was a time when everybody would say OH! nothing like Calcutta - Kolkata!
Again I would say I am not wanting to hurt anyone but these are the facts which you all will agree on.
A good job is more than just a paycheck. A good job fosters independence and discipline, and contributes to the health of the community. A good job is a means to provide for the health and welfare of your family, to own a home, and save for retirement.James H. Douglas, Jr.
Thank you and warm regards to all.
